4. DEATH OF A RICKSHAW PULLER DUE TO STARVATION IN GAYA, BIHAR

-- Hindustan (Delhi Edition), May 2005

Vinod Bhuiya was only 28 years of age; he used to pull a Rickshaw in Gaya city. This was the only source of income for him, but for few months he was not able to earn anything to sustain himself. Vinod was a resident of Garmia Village, of Angra Gram Panchayat of District Gaya. As he could not manage a living in the city, he had to go back to his village. Due to unemployment, he starved for 10 days and later died.

His wife along with his two small children, aged 5 and 6, went to her native village as Vinod was unable to feed the family for many days. For a few days, Vinod¡¦s mother could manage to give him food once a day. Vinod¡¦s mother was earning a very little money by washing utensils at a neighbouring house. She could only manage to feed her husband, who was very old, and her son once a day.

On the day Vinod died, the Dalit community he belongs to started to collect money for his last rites from the Dalit Community.
